Welcome to the German Language School Wellington.
The German Language School Wellington is a parent initiative that was founded with the aim of teaching German speaking children aged 5 years and above German conversation, reading, writing, and grammar. We also want to foster friendships and build a community with other German speaking children and families, and to have fun learning about and celebrating cultural events together.
We currently employ 3 teachers (with German as their mother tongue) who teach 5-6 classes. We have small classes with a maximum of 10 children. As a parent initiative, we keep costs low at ca $9 per week (ca $90 per term) depending on the number of children attending. New children of any age are welcome and get to have one free trial lesson to help decide whether they want to become a member of the group. Please note that we are not resourced to offer “German as a foreign language” classes to beginners. Our children usually grow up in bi- or even trilingual families, where mum and/or dad is from a German speaking country, and they have German as one of their native languages.
We offer a German immersion afternoon to the families at our German school, with children having the rare opportunity to speak and listen to only German while playing together. At Karori West Normal School, we have access to a large outdoor area with a variety of play and sports areas. We are also able to access the school's spacious staff room to chat over a cup of tea or coffee, play games or read a book. Our small German library with German books, CDs and DVDs is located in the staff room too and all members of our language school are very welcome to use it.
